This represents an amount payable to the tax authorities and is a liability of the business. Only the net amount of 460 is posted to the income statement revenue account. The gross amount of 552 posted to the accounts receivable account, represents the amount due from the retailer, and is a balance sheet asset. Every business is responsible for paying income taxes, but there is no federal sales tax in the United States.

If you have or will receive equity in or title to the property, you cannot deduct the rent. You can generally deduct as a business expense some or all interest you pay or accrue during the tax year on debts related to your business. Interest relates to your business if you use the proceeds of the loan for a business expense.

Tax accounting ensures companies are tax compliant and focus on company taxes. Financial accounting focuses on preparing financial statements and tracking financial transactions. They are separate and distinct only if you maintain complete and separate books and records for each business. You must file Form 8300, Report of Cash Payments Over $10,000 Received in a Trade or Business, if you receive more than $10,000 in cash in one transaction, or two or more related business transactions. It also includes certain monetary instruments such as cashier’s and traveler’s checks and money orders.

If you must account for an inventory in your business, you must use an accrual method of accounting for your purchases and sales. However, see Exception for Small Business Taxpayers, below. If you do not have an AFS and elect to use this deferral method, you must include the advance payment in gross income in the year received, to the extent you have earned the amount.

Generally, you can use any combination of cash, accrual, and special methods of accounting if the combination clearly reflects your income and you use it consistently. If the IRS approves a change in your tax year or if you are required to change your tax year, you must figure the tax and file your return for the short tax period. The short tax period begins on the first day after the close of your old tax year and ends on the day before the first day of your new tax year. Even if a taxable entity was not in existence for the entire year, a tax return is required for the time it was in existence. Requirements for filing the return and figuring the tax are generally the same as the requirements for a return for a full tax year (12 months) ending on the last day of the short tax year. Sales tax provides a state or local government with funds for public services.


Figure your business income on the basis of a tax year and according to your regular method of accounting (see chapter 2). If the sale of a product is an income-producing factor in your business, you usually have to use inventories to clearly show your income. Dealers in real estate are not allowed to use inventories.

Do not show the discount amount separately as an item in gross income. Do not report on Schedule C a gain or loss from the disposition of property that is neither stock in trade nor held primarily for sale to customers. Instead, you must report these gains and losses on other forms. Advance payments received under a lease that does not put any restriction on their use or enjoyment are income in the year you receive them. This is generally true no matter what accounting method or period you use. You operate a plumbing business and use the cash method of accounting.

If you use the cash method of accounting, you normally report income when you receive payment. You cannot take a bad debt deduction for amounts owed to you that you have not received and cannot collect if you never included those amounts in income.

You would not be allowed any charitable contribution deduction for the contributed property. The basis of donated inventory is any cost incurred for the inventory in an earlier year that you would otherwise include in your opening inventory for the year of the contribution. This chapter does not apply to a personal service business, such as the business of a doctor, lawyer, carpenter, or painter.
